Supplements to Avoid
These supplements should be absolutely avoided as they have caused cancer,
severe kidney damage, severe liver damage, heart problems and death. READ
LABELS carefully as these are often included in multi-ingredient products under a
variety of product names.

Aristolochic acid
(Aristolochia, birthwort, snakeroot, snakeweed, sangree root, sangrel, serpentary, serpentaria;              
asarum canadense, wild ginger)
Problems: Kidney failure, sometimes requiring transplant; reported deaths, potent carcinogen;               
Banned in 7 European countries, Egypt, Venezuela, and Japan; FDA warnings in 2001

Androstenedione
(4-androstene-3, 17-dione, andro, androstene)
Problems: Increased risk of cancer, decrease in HDL ("good") cholesterol; FDA warned 23                       
companies to discontinue manufacturing, distributing, and marketing in March '04.

Bitter Orange
(Citrus aurantium, green orange, kijitsu, neroili oil, Seville orange, shangzhou zhiqiao, sour orange,         
zhi oiao, zhi xhi)
Problems: High blood pressure; increased risk of stroke, heart attack and heart arrythmias

Chaparral
(Larrea divaricata, creosote bush, greasewood, hediondilla, jarilla, larreastat)
Problems: Liver damage, often irreversible; death; FDA warnings in 1992

Comfrey
(Symphytum officinale, ass ear, black root, blackwort, bruisewort, consolidae radix, consound, gum plant,
healing herb, knitback, knitbone, salsify, slippery root, symphytum radix, wallwort)
Problems:  Liver damage, often irreversible; death; FDA advised removal from market in 2001

Germander
(Teucrium chamaedrys, wall germander, wild germander)
Problems:  Liver damage, often irreversible; death; Banned in France and Germany

Kava
(Piper methysticum, ava, awa, gea, gi, intoxicating pepper, kao, kavain, kawa-pfeffer, kew, long pepper,
malohu, maluk, meruk, milik, rauschpfeffer, sakau, tonga, wurzelstock, yagona, yangona)
Problems:  Liver damage, sometimes irreversible; death; FDA warning to consumers in 2002;                  
Banned in Canada, Switzerland, Germany, South Africa, and Singapore

Lobelia
(Lobelia inflata, asthma weed, bladderpod, emetic herb, gagroot, lobelie, indian tabacco, wild tobacco,
pukeweed, vomit wort)
Problems: Breathing difficulty, rapid heartbeat, low blood pressure, diarrhea, dizziness, tremors,           
possible death

Organ/glandular extracts   
(brain, adrenal, pituitary, placenta or other gland substance or concentrate)
Problems:  Theoretical risk of mad cow disease, particularly from brain extracts; FDA banned                 
high-risk bovine materials from older cows in foods and supplements in 2004. Banned in France             
and Switzerland

Pennyroyal Oil
(Hedeoma pulegioides, lurk-in-the-ditch, mosquito plant, piliolerial,pudding grass, pulegium,
run-by-the-ground, squaw balm, squamint, stinking balm, tickweed)
Problems:  Liver and kidney failure, nerve damage, convulsions, abdominal tenderness, burning of        
the throat; death

Scullcap
(Scutellaria lateriflora, blue pimpernel, helmet flower, hoodwort, mad weed, mad-dog herb, mad-dog
weed, quaker bonnet, scutelluria, skullcap)
Problems:  Liver damage

Yohimbe
(Pausinystalia yohimbe, johimbe, yohimbehe, yohimbine)
Problems:  Change in blood pressure, heart arrythmias, respiratory depression, heart attack, death
