Frequently Asked Questions
Products
Q:  I can buy other brands in the grocery store - why should I consider Thorne?
A:  In short, not all products are equal in quality. When evaluating a supplement there are several
things to consider and these things aren't always apparent on the label.  These include 1) purity (free
of contaminants and unnecessary fillers), 2) potency and consistency (the product contains what the
label says it does, in the amount indicated, and consistently  from dose to dose and bottle to bottle),
3) bioavailability (the product can be absorbed and used by the body).  There is no government agency
testing the products on our shelves - it is up to each manufacturer to provide quality control.
Independent labs have found that not all manufacturers produce products that can pass these
evaluations.

Thorne Research is dedicated to providing  the best nutritional supplements in the world.  As an
adjunct to this mission, they utilize an in-house quality control laboratory, as well as outside,
independent laboratories. Near-infrared spectrophotometry (NIRS), atomic absorption
spectrophotometry, inductively coupled plasma technology, or high performance liquid
chromatography (HPLC) are used to check every raw material purchased, every mineral
manufactured, and every finished product before it is released for sale. These items are assayed for
purity, quality, heavy metals, and potency. Those materials that do not meet their rigid specifications
are rejected. In addition, products are sent to an independent lab for microbial analysis, and fatty
acids (including fish oils) are sent out for pesticide analysis.

Q:  The label doesn't tell me how much to take - why is that?
A:  Thorne leaves the recommended dosage off the label so that your health care provider may specify
what he or she would like for you to take based on your medical history and current situation. Some
products also require a physician's authorization because of the potential risks or interactions
associated with the supplement.  Thorne's recommended dosage is provided on the website as a
guideline - but it is up to you and your health care provider to determine what is best for you.

Keep in mind that more is not always better - like medications, supplements should be respected.
High doses may cause damage and even supplements that are considered to be free of side effects
may cause side effects in some people. Always include supplements when providing a list of
medications you are taking to your health care providers - particularly before surgery.  A number of
supplements must be stopped prior to surgery and/or may interact with prescription medications.

Healthy Giving Fund
Q:  How much of my purchase contributes to the Healthy Giving Fund?
A:  100% of the net profits from purchases made via HealthyGiving.com go into the Fund.

Q: Is this "for real"?
A:  Absolutely.  This is by far the most common question from  friends and family, "But why do you
want to give so much away?", as well as the general fear that this model is not feasible when many
small businesses struggle to stay afloat.  Core to the business model is the ability to provide quality
nutritional supplements to those who need them most and to the extent possible, provide other health
related assistance.  Adjustments will be made as needed to ensure the viability of the business and
the growth of the Fund.

Q: Are there other ways to help?
A: You may sponsor the fund in a number of ways - see the Sponsor tab for more information.   In
addition, we plan to post "Call to Action" items related to legislation that will affect health care.
